Mike Lazaridis, founder and co-chairman of Research in Motion (the maker of the Blackberry devices)
announced last night that he is giving an additional $50 million to the
Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, bringing his total contribution to $150 million. The Perimeter Institute is dedicated to addressing foundational issues in current theoretical physics research by concentrating on cross-discipline research areas such as:
- Cosmology
- Particle Physics
- Quantum Foundations
- Quantum Gravity
- Quantum Information Theory
- Superstring Theory
In their short existence (since 1999) the Perimeter Institute and its staff have won a number of awards for their research. Lazaridis' contributions will only help the Institute in its goal of a better understanding of the rules of the universe around us.
